Hi all,
I have a minor issue with video playback. My previous computer had a RAID 0 array and a pretty low end video card, I think it was an nVidia Geforce but wasn't very expensive. I was working mostly in DV video at the time, and the computer had no problem playing video back smoothly.
Now I have a new (home built) computer with 16gigs of RAM, an i7 processor and an nVidia video card, a Geforce model. Not sure of model number but mid range. Regular hard drives (SATA III), no RAID. I am working in full HD, mostly using .mov files shot with a Panasonic GH3, at highest quality setting. Even in the low-rez (yellow) mode, I am getting some skipping and stuttering when I try to play back these files. I don't use AMA linking, just regular import of clips into bins. Some clips play back fine, many do not. Some stuttering at DNxHD 145, almost no playback at DNxHD 200 or higher. I believe at lower DNxHD rates, like 75 or 45, playback improves.
I guess my question is: knowing that I need more video power to play these clips back, should I increase RAM to 32gbs, add a RAID 0 array, or upgrade my video card? Or some combination of these? Any light you could shine on this would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance!
