Motion effects on Matte clips

Hello

I tried to find an answer on the forums but could not find a definitive yes/no -

Can you put motion effects on a imported clip (in my instance a mov file) that has an alpha track on it (matte effect).

If so then what is wrong with my clip and how does one do this?

I tried the promote the matte to 3D before adding it  - but alt drag and drop does not work / nor does segment mode select clip and double click on click.

When stepping into it I can add the timewarp to the underlying track but not to the matte track. This makes them play at different speeds and it looks well - not so good!

Any help would be appreciated.
