1080p Project -- Finishing in 4K

I have just hopped into the middle of an ongoing documentary project as an assistant editor and the project involves mainly 4K interview footage and archival footage which currently are all super low-res (720p or 1080p) but which I understand will eventually be replaced by higher resolution footage which we will order from their source once we know exactly what we need (I imagine some manual over-cutting will be involved).

The Avid project is currently set up at 1080p 23.98fps and I am quite sure we will eventually finish at 4K 23.98fps. All the clips in the latest edits are transcoded proxies at 1080p 23.98fps.

My question is, when we finally get to the point of finishing the film, what is the workflow in terms of transitioning to a place where I can export a 4K output with 4K footage?

I am not quite sure why the project wasn't started as a 4K project with 4K footage transcoded to 1080p proxies and then we can just relink. But that's beyond my control and I notice that I can actually change the Presets in the "Format" tab of my project window to 4K and change the raster dimension but I am a little wary of actually doing it out of fear of messing anything up, so just want to make sure if that's the right way to go, or if I should start a 4K project and bring the latest edit in (and what's the workflow for that)?

We are not picture-locked yet so I am just researching a little bit ahead. Basically I am hoping to find the safest route to bring the project to a place where we can have the edit linked to 4K footage and export in 4K.

Any insight will be most appreciated. Thank you!
