Crashing on Exit and when using effects and AMA

I've had a solid system for years now. After upgrading to 8.8, I'm experiencing a lot of issues. I've been in touch with support and I've been installing all the latest updates up to 8.8.4 now...

The issue is primarity crashing when using basic effects (CC, resize, keys & mattes) and when working with AMA files. Also it crashes when closing the app almost every time. Strait cuts on DNxHD media, very stable.

Support has had me clean reinstall Media Composer and wipe user profiles & preferences... hasn't helped. Can anyone lend some advice?

System Specs:

- Avid Media Composer 8.8.4
- Dell 7910 Workstation
 - Dual Xeon E5-2630 v3 8-core 2.4Ghz
 - 32GB ram
 - AMD FirePro W7100
 - Blackmagic Design DeckLink Mini Monitor
- Windows 10 64 bit

Avid Tech Support Agent Destroyed My User Profile

An avid technician destroyed my user profile. Can't believe it. He created a new user profile and he couldn't even get mine back. Now the program keeps launches and crashes with all sorts of crazy error messages.

MC 8.4 AMA links picture jerky

Hello,

my porblem was the resion i losed the intresst to cut movies with avid mc. Becaous it dont make fun.

Now i have to cut and i have to like to do it.:-)

My starting material (H264mov form GH4) is on a HDD and the PC plays the matiral well the playback in VLC oder mediaplayer is sync and fluid all time. BUt if i link the same material in the Avid i have no sync between sound and picture and it is judder (? -right word) the whole time. every clip. If i transcode and import it, then is all ok.

But i cant import all material in first. :-(

What i do wrong?

The HDD are red WD / the system is on SSD / i5 / 32 GB / nvidia 660 / matrox mini

import link issues, new to process

Just moved up from MC5 to MC8.  All this linking , AMA and conolidating is new to me...and awkward.  had footage on P2 cards, had them put on a hard drive by friend.  He gave me the drive.  The folder with my files says contents.  How do i link, ingest, import??  I navigated into the video folder inside of the contents folder but some clips are offline and others are ok.  Confused.

Cant add filler at start using Audio Track Effects

When I have audio effects dropped onto an audio track, MC 9 (CORRECTION - 8.9) wont let me add 'filler at start'. I get the error: 'EXCEPTION: CM_NO_SOURCE'

Tried different user settings. I can still add 'filler at position' - but no filler at start. Whats weird is that nothing looks like its happening, but if you zoom into the timeline you can see that it did add the filler, but the Timecode changes color and the timeline is unusable as it just keeps throwing the EXCEPTION error.Avid Filler at start error

Selecting right format for video input

Hello

Current project involves Video input from new Canon EOS 77D Camera DIGI 7 HD AVI out

Clips sharp and clear on System Hard Drive and look fine on the time line monitor

Complete assembled video on time line looks great however export via default quick time formats looks very ordinary .

Suspect I am not selecing the right input - I m using the default DNXHD MXF 

Request advice for input settings in Avid 8.9.2 for the current Canon EOS series Digi 7 processor series..

Does anyone know if the Matrox MXO2 LE will still work if we upgrade to Media Composer 8.8? If not which was the latest version of MC that did support it?

Would installing CAD/3d modelling apps conflict with MC?

Can anyone weigh in on how free of conflicts MC installations are with other applications these days?

On my MC machine, almost everything has been running without conflicts despite - in addition to MC - having Sibelius7.5, Cubase 8, Reason 8, a large EWQL sample library, and PPro CS4. (The only glitch: I have to switch video drivers back and forth if I round-trip to Resolve from MC - so I don't and use the Baselight plug-in instead.) The only app I need to run at the same time as MC is Cubase; but I do so seldom and not for long (which works as long as I keep the cubase files small and watch my ram use.)

Other than the above-mentioned apps, I would keep the installation quite clean. (Installing virus-protection only when necessary and then immediately uninistalling it, for example.)

I am considering getting a new computer (a laptop, if that's relevant) to run the above. But I'd like to also install CAD/modelling programmes (SketchUp, Rhino, either AutoCAD Architecture or Revit, and possibly Maya.) None of these would need to run concurrently with MC. I've researched the hardware requirements for the various programmes and it appears that MCs recommended configurations (I have their list of currently-approved specs) will more than satisfy them all; but I need to anticiipate possible conflicts. I suppose I could give it a try and at some point in the future would have to double the hardware if it turns out I have to, but I'd like to enter into it with a sense of how realistic the prospects are of operating all this on one machine.

MC 8.9.2 Background Queue not working - SOLVED

When I try to consolidate or transcode a AMA linked clip with "run in background" checked my Avid does nothing. There is no error message and everything is green. The Background Queue says "running" and "processing" but nothing happens. No progress at all.

Is this a bug in this version? Or am I missing a setting? Previous versions worked well.

A show with many episodes...in only one project?

I have seen many productions creating a separate Avid Project for each episode of a show. Is there any reason to do so?

Is it not smartest to have everything in same project and just create folders inside of that instead?

 

How would you arrange a project like for example Survicor with 40 episodes?

What's it like working with footage from the Sony A7S II?

Someone might be shooting some footage for me on a Sony A7S II in SLog3, 4K, with the final film being delivered in HD. I looked up the specs of the camera and was a bit surprised - I didn't expect to see 4:2:0, 8-bit in the specs. I know it's the low-light champion but was wondering what it was like to work with the footage.

The specs show that the A7S II records 4:2:0, 8-bit, at 100Mbits/sec internally whether it's 4K or HD and 4:2:2, 8-bit externally with a 4K recorder. From what I understand XAVC S is supported in MC but not the timecode?

I own a BMPCC which in ProResHQ shoots HD 4:2:2, 10-bit, ~185Mbits/sec. That's without using RAW. The footage is really easy to handle in MC and Resolve.

From an editing, colour grading etc. pov, does 4:2:2, 10-bit, footage offer more flexiblity to work with over footage that you convert from 4K (4:2:0, 8-bit) to HD? Is 100Mbits/sec enough at 4K? I appreciate what you're shooting matters.

I would appreciate your thoughts if you used the camera or edited footage from it.

anamorphic resolution in Avid

Hello. I'm using avid media composer 6.5.3 on windows. project created in 1080P\25. we shot footage on red epic anamorphic lenses. after that i link ama footage to avid without using redicine. source timeline show material in 4:3. and i need to make it in 2.35. but i dont know how. Can you please help me?

Link Settings: Uncheck "Enable Quality Settings"?

Hi,

I do not really understand the Quality tab in the Link Settings box.

So my question is: Is it ok to UNcheck Enable Quality Settings?

 

The only thing I do with AMA linking so far is link tocamera originals and then transcode the AMA linked media right away to Avid MediaFiles.

 

I do not edit with AMA linked media at all.

And I never link back to the original footage, I always master in DNxHD185.

MC auto-creates a bin called "AMA folder" - why?

MC 8.9.3 symphony opt

 

Avid creates a bin named "AMA Folder" by itself.

Inside this bin are 4 objects: 2 sequences (I exported), 1 audio clip and 1 graphic as a matte key (wich both I imported).

I nerver saw this before.

 

 

What's this?

Can I delete these AMA objects?

I can't find anything via Google!

 

Of course there are a lot more Objects in this project. So the content of the bin reflects only a selection...

Any help is greatly appreciated!

creating subtitles

Hi,

 

had and have to do a lot of "burnt in" subtitles. Normally I use title tool, but I wonder if there is a better way converting text files into subtitles, a plug in e.g.?

SubCap does not seem to be the right answer for me, as my clients just sends me doc files without any timecode data. If I got it right subcap needs a special kind of file?

 

Any suggestions?

Avid freezing my PC for 2" regularly

Anyone had this?  Everything freezes for about 2" every few minutes when Avid is open - be that dragging in the timeline or typing in a Word doc.  It ignored my keyboard typing for this post 5 times and so misses typed words!  It doesnt happen if Avid is closed.

I thougit the lack of response when editing was a disk issue - just like a disk went to sleep and takes a couple of seconds to wake up.  But its not since it happens on SSD's and all my drives on my 'full power-never off' setting.

It looks to me like its polling something - maybe something to do with AMA - and this gets priority over everything?

Any ideas guys and gals?

Renders disappear between suites

Hi everyone, 

We're on v8.4.5 of Media Composer at our facility and we're having a slight issue between our online suites, our online editor has rendered all material to the correct ISIS partition, saved and handed the sequence over to one of our edit assistants for export. On opening the sequence on a second machine most renders have dissappeared and have had to be recreated.

Anyone have thoughts on why this has happened?

Some info about our new equipment:

All four onlines run MC v8.4.5 with Symphony option, baselight for avid, Boris CC on HPz840's. All machines have the same version of all software as I installed from a toolkit drive specifically to ensure they were identical so i'm at a loss. 

if anyone could offer words of wisdom on this I would be greatful,

Sound relevant to a video clip isn't playing.

Hey guys, I'm hoping someone can help me - 

I'm quite new to the software (usually do photo editing but teaching myself this), I've stumped myself trying to work out what's wrong with the last video clip, I've got an audio track over most of the timeline (that works) except for the last one which I want to be able to hear the sound from the video instead.

I can't find anywhere which tells me why it's not working so if you can tell me from the ss if I'm missing something obvious I'll be grateful!

field render issue on long sequence render

We have some odd render issues on a couple of clips within a 2 hour timeline sequence on Media composer 8.9.1.

When we render the entire sequence to avid DnxHD 120i these clips exhibit parts of the picture moved sideways on one field, this over a second or so.

However when you render just the affected section the error is not there, indeed if I render the timeline in 4 half hour chunks again the problem does not show, but once again output the entire 2 hours and the problem shows up. It's not in random places but always the same point, but as I say never when you render shorter chunks.

Any suggestions ?
