.avb ID structure

Can anyone share the way .avb ID is structured? I have isolated the byte sequence in .avb files that make Avid bins unique. I can create new bins with unique IDs outside of Media Composer by writing random values to these bytes. But I have no clue how this ID is structured, if it's trully random or if there is some order to it.

To make it a bit more clear--each Avid bin has a unique ID. This is what prevents you from opening the attic bin and the parent bin at the same time. The bins may have different file names but if the ID is the same they are considered to be the same bin by Media Composer. This logic works well for attic retreaval in a way. But I'm writing automation tools and want to avoid creating invalid IDs.


How to "consolidate" camera footage to exclude unused takes

Hi,

there's a short film edited in MC (camera footage AMA linked and transcoded to DNxHD36) which soon goes to a coloring facility. They will get an AAF and the original camera files, but is there a way to give them only the files which are involved in the final timeline?

Media Composer and AE Pro Import

Hello everyone!

 

I am trying to use Pro Import in After Effects. I cut my video in Avid Media Composer, exported an AAF, and attempted to use AE's pro import feature. I am getting the error message below in AE. Media Composer is working as it should. Has anyone had this issue before and how did you resolve it? I am 100% certain all of my settings are correct.

It really cramps my style when I can't open certain applications because my GPU driver is out of date.

Hi,

I'm just wondering what the point of the settings.xml file is, if not all the settings are stored in it?

Eg. As far as I can tell, something as basic and fundamental as format settings for projects (ie. the parameters in the format tab in MC), are still stored in the *.avp binary project file, and not in the projects settings xml file (at least in my version:2018.12.3.51505). Is there a good reason why settings are stored in multiple locations in this way?

I understand that not all settings can be changed effectively without the possibility for errors ie. changing timebase - but still no real reason to reserve them or store these seperately in the project file?

Let's say I want to change a bunch of interlaced projects into progressive ones, or even create a bunch of projects at once, change the raster or framerate of some - can't do it by editing just the settings xml, as all these settings are hard coded into the projects .avp binary.

 This means that if I want to automate this kind of thing, then I have to overwrite or bundle project files and xml's, one for each format type / configuration of settings I need. It gets really complicated fast.

Also, let's say I'm working with multiple editors. When I create a project, the basic settings such as raster and framerate are written into the avp file, and a bunch of defaults are written into the xml. When I enter the project, MC creates a user/machine folder and copies the settings and project file from the root, into the machine folder. If I edit any setting with a 'Project' status in the settings tab, then this setting is only unique for the current machine, and not global for the actual project - which you might expect might happen if you edit a 'project' setting. Surely this is a unique 'Machine Project' setting? and the User, Site and Project distinctions now become confusing and complex too.

This means then, that if I truly want these settings to be simple global settings for the project, then I have to use windows to copy the files from my machine folder into the root of the project folder and overwrite the settings and project files there.

We call this the 'Cowboy Trick' - because it is a trick for a cowboy ie. a non-prof, shabby person, doing a half hearted and bad job Huh?

I have not yet found a tick box or setting in MC, that enables me to 'Apply project settings globally for all users' - is this at all possible?

If not, a truly external project settings xml that all users can inherit from would be a giant step, and a huge help for people like me who want to create and change lots of projects at a time for multiple users. It would be a much cleaner and tidier, better way to keep global project settings in one place.

I'm sure there are more pros than cons for most typical users if MC worked this way.

 

How will it work? Mix XAVC Intra 100 and xdcam hd 50 media?

We have a project where all OB media will be in xdcamHD50 1080/50i

and all ENG fotage in XAVC Intra 100 10bit 25p

I assume that we should have separate projects for each media. The work project will be in 1080/25p.

 

So, a timeline with above mixed media, will it work smoothly?

Hello:

I have a few shots with titles in a certain project, and i want to take it from there and import it to another project.

Instead to  edit the same shots with titles, i want to import it or doing other things to put it in the new project.

How do i do it?

Both projects in the same harddisk. i can,t open both media of the projects.

Media Composer RAM allocation

Hi,

I've noticed that every time I start Media Composer these two lines about memory is written to the EVENTLOG.LOG (located at C:\Users\Public\Documents\Avid Media Composer\Avid FatalErrorReports).

Should I be worried about that?

I've looked around the web and found out that AWE is "Address Windowing Extensions" that is "a set of extensions that allows an application to quickly manipulate physical memory greater than 4GB" according to Microsoft https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/desktop/memory/address-windowing-extensions


The page says that for it to work "An application must have the Lock Pages in Memory privilege to use AWE. To obtain this privilege, an administrator must add Lock Pages in Memory to the user's User Rights Assignments."


At Avid I've found a couple of mentions of this "Lock pages in Memory":

Adobe RGB in Source Settings Color Space

Hi! My Nikon D3300 can capture both in sRGB and Adobe RGB. In Source Settings in Media Composer I can select sRGB but I don't see an option for Adobe RGB color space. Is there a way to use that color space or is it impossible? Any suggestions?

Why is this happening?

Earlier this year, Sorenson Media announced that Squeeze was no longer part of their portfolio and ceased all licensing, development and support of that product line. Avid is therefore no longer able to sell or support the product.

Can I still get help with issues?

Customers who require support for Squeeze should refer to the Sorenson Media website. Avid cannot provide any support for issues related to Squeeze.

When will I stop being able to use Squeeze as part of my Media Composer subscription?

Sorenson Squeeze installers will be removed from accounts on January 31st. Starting January 1st, the next time a subscription license is reactivated – either as part of an annual renewal, a monthly payment, or a monthly “call home,” – Squeeze will stop running as part of a subscription license.

What about an alternative software solution?

Avid will not be replacing Squeeze with an alternative software option.

Hi all,

So I'm cutting with Scarlet-W 4K r3d files in Avid 2018.12.3.51505 on PC, and I have transcoded them to DNXHD 36 format.

The drive with the r3ds has moved - how can I tell Avid to relink to them?

Each time I try to relink it finds the darn DNXHD 36 files, not the R3Ds.

I've pressed "highest quality" and I've read other posts that said that should do it, but it isn't.

What am I missing??

10bit to 8 bit banding with FS710 Bit XAVC I and XAVC L

I have a question about the banding i get when i switched from 10 bit to grengren or green yellow button.

Thats realy anoying, because so i can not export for the internet, or just a normal h264 file all get this terrible banding what i can see in Avid when i switched to the green green mode from the 10 bit mode.

I played around with different tools (Filmconvert, the Luts in the Avid Source settings, and the Avid baselight, but i am not able to get rid of this banding in greys and Bokehs.

What is funny for me my GUI Monitor is working in 8 bit, but there I see no banding when Avid is working in 10 bit mode. So I guess there is a problem how Avid downconvert 10 bit to 8 bit.

Does other people have the same Banding Issues how do you deal with converting from 10 to 8 bit?

I work in a variety of NTSC and Pal environments, in everything from mini dv to HD. I always check off the RGB box when I export material, but how can I determine which is the best for each project? Is there a rule depending on the source material or where it will end up (web video vs. broadcast tv, etc).

I'm on 2018.4 and plan to upgrade to 2018.12.x    Which version is the most stable...especially on workstations still running Win 7?

A Suggestion (a Plea) for the when the new version is released.

If Avid wants us to try the new and improved 2019 version when it is rolled out, I have a suggestion...a plea, really.   Please allow us to keep our current version of MC on our computer while also trying out the new version when it is finally released.  As a working professional who uses MC on a daily basis, I don't want to risk uninstalling a working version until I know the new version is stable and works for me.   Even a 10 day co-install testing period, where I can keep both versions on the system, would be welcome.

 

Ingesting 8 bit source to 10 bit media, oops

By accident I ingested a fair amount of 8 bit source footage to a 10 bit avid media format (dnxhr hqx 1920x1080), while I visually don't see any issues can I run into problems later on when this gets send to grading? I can redo the ingesting but if it's not an issue i'd rather leave it like this.

Hello fellow Avid enthusiasts,

I am hoping you can help me with an issue I currently have. I guessing that I have somehow locked bins in one of my projects. I am unable to do the following:

1) Link any more media into the bins.

2) I am unable to see tracks V2 and V3 on the timeline...even though the footage is in the bins. I have made sure the clips are viewable so they are linked to the correct files. I have not coloured the tracks grey...this has just happened along with the problem.

3) I am unable to even select or click on any clip in the sequence, even if it is viewable.

I have never come across something like this before and I imagine it is probably something very easy to fix...my mind is spent and I can't seem to figure it out...hoping you lot can point out the obivous to me!

FrameFlex in multicam mode

Good day, I have one qestion using FrameFlex option in multicam mode. I have two files with adjusted FrameFlex. I group this files by IN point and get group clip, but after inserting this clip on timeline I do not see FrameFlex icon on the clip and can't apply FrameFlex option to group clip - "Source settings" is inactive. Although FrameFlex settings is applied to clips and I see it in group clip, I can't adjust it and I need adjust FrameFlex individually for each clip on timeline, created during multicam editing. Can I do this?
