3840x2160 Footage

I received footage that is 3840x2160 (16:9).   When I create a project in MC, my 4K options are 3996x2160 or 4096x2160.   Which format should I select when using this footage?   The project will eventually be down-rez'd to 1920x1080.

Drag & drop delay - since 18.12.X

I experience this strange behaviour since one of the 18.12 releases (not sure when it started; I have worked with 12.1, 12.3 and now 12.5):

The very first drag & drop action in a MC editing session (clips to bin, effect to clip, etc.) takes an abnormally long time to complete; e.g. when I drag an effect and drop it on a clip, nothing happens, the mouse pointer doesn't change and the effect is not applied; the second attempt works, and any other drag-drop action after that is just fine .

It looks much like this: http://community.avid.com/forums/p/185073/860592.aspx#860592 but I'm on PC and no BTT here...

No clue...anyone else seeing this ?

"Com port cannot be configured for remote play"

Hi

I always used to control avid with my DAW though remote play.  I have been exporting and transcoding since I have had my new computer that has no com ports.  I recently bought a 2 port Sunnix USB unit and it works fine in my DAW but Avid cannot configure for remote play.  After a crash Avid showd another error "The wrong Avid Serial Driver installed.  Reinstall the correct Avid Serial driver (AvidXPSerial.sys) to use Remote Play and Capture."

The sunnix usb serial ports always worked in the past with no issues.

Getting this working will  save me many hrs.

Question: For Web only viewing the client monitior be on RGB or REC709

Getting a new BernQ monitor supposeldly for video editing (let's see how good it is)-Outputing just for WEB- it has REC709 and ofcourse RGB - should I grade in RGB mode or 709?  Seems logical to set BM up for RGB and monitor.  Or should I just stay with 709 for all settings?

thank you

Export as MXF

How can I export my DNxHR sequence as an MXF file?   I've always just exported HD sequences as same-as-source to be encoded in Squeeze, but I'm being asked to deliver this UHD project in the MXF container.

DNxHR quality choice?

I have files from an FS7 shot in XAVC-I.   After AMA linking, I want to transcode the material to DNxHR for editing and color correction.   The final sequence will untimately be down-converted to 1080p for local broadcast.

Is DNxHR HQ overkill or is DNxHR SQ more than sufficient?

Titler + Tutorials

I'm doing an UHD project and went to use the new Titler + for the first time.   After over 20 years using the original Title Tool, I now need to learn how to use this new one.   Are there any tutorials on the new tool?   I searched the internet but did not come up with much.

exception legend audio communications error hardware underrun reason:klukaerr_underrun

I have recently been getting this error popping up on a project I have been working on.

All footage was shot on same camera and settings, yet it only seems to happen when playing certain interviews. The Rushes play fine but when its in a sequence with lots of layers and audio it pops up with the error

exception legend audio communications error hardware underrun reason:klukaerr_underrun

Now all the other interviews with the same amount of layers and everything play fine but its just one or 2 of the interviews that do it!

I am running a Dell T7910 with 2x E5-2670 v3 processors and 64GB ram. Rushes are on shared storage running over network (speed is fine). The PC is connected to a Nitris DX feeding a Sony broadcast monitor over SDI

I have been scratching my head over this one for days and can't work it out!

Any Ideas?

i have a problem importing a aaf file from premiere pro.... when importing, it will pop up something written like "swcodeinterfacecm", tried on two machines. but no sucess..If i click my sequence, i can't open it and a dialogue box will pop up "assertion failed:pvcinfo!=null....swcodeinterfacecm.cpp line 238"
I've tried to export the aaf in resolve and open in avid. but still the problem remains... is avid even compatible with aaf files generaterd from other softwaRE? every file is DNXHD and in avidmedia files folder.

here is what i have in my console:
* Exception: FATAL_ERROR, msg:Assertion failed: pVCInfo != NULL, file:..\..\src\Consumers\Devices\SWCodecInterfaceCM.cpp, line:238

Interplay Check-in's not appearing

Hi,

We are running Media Composer 2018.12.5 in an Interplay Environment (2018.11 for IP clients / 2018.9 Interplay Engine).

When you check a clip (or anything) in to Interplay, the check-in appears to complete without issue on the Media Composer side of things. When you check in Prodcution Management window or in Access the clips have not appeared however.

Have tried checking in as the Administrator or as a new user to a new folder with no luck either.

Any ideas?

Can't deceide between 2 down-convert options?

I have a UHD project which I need to down-convert to 1080p for local commercial insertion.   I tried 2 separate methods:

1) Dragged the UHD sequence into a 1080p project, exported as same-as-source (DNxHR) and encoded to broadcaster's specs in Squeeze.

2) Exported a same-as-source and down-converted to 1080p specs directly in Squeeze.

For the life of me, I can see any difference in quality. Confused  But I'm using a computer monitor, not an expensive calibrated broadcast monitor.   I'm hoping someone who works with high-end calibrated equipment can tell me if one method is better than the other...or maybe there is no discernable difference?

QT Web Engine Process Breakpoint

Good afternoon all,

I've just installed MC 2018.12.3. Whenever I launch it I get an error window:

QtWebEngineProcess.exe - Application Error

The exception Breakpoint

A breakpoint has been reached.

(0x80000003) occurred in the application at location

0x00007FFBF6FE6309

Click on OK to terminate the program.

I do not have any version of Quicktime installed on the machine due to a Cyber Essentials requirement to not run unsupported software, and the argument I made for upgrading to this version of MC was to drop the requirement for QT. I'm guessing that this error appears because QT is not on the machine - besides installing Quicktime (which I won't be allowed to do - I tried to make that argument as a special case with the IT security guys at work) what can I do to get rid of this message?

Some weirdness when linking media

I just want to see if this is my system.

On MC 2018.12.3, I'm having some interesting AMA linking issues. I've got an XAVC-S file (MP4) linked into a bin, but the file location is not the one it's supposed to be (I was having some issues, so I copied the file to a different directory and used that). The current directory ig G:\New Folder (this is supposed to be a temporary thing). The location of the original folder (and where the file also exists) is G:\Vacation 2016\XAVC-S\card1_7-8-2016 (Yes, I am editing vacation video for the family). It's the same file name (C0015.MP4).

I renamed the file in New Folder to something else, and then did a relink of the master clip. It did not relink. I linked the original file in the vacation folder in a new bin, and then relinked the sequence using selected items in open bins. That did not relink.

Here's the fun part. When I do a get info on the both of the master clips, they both point to G:\New Folder even though I most definitely linked to the file in the Vacation folder.

I renamed the AMA Manangement folder and tried again, but with the same results. Then I deleted the master clip from the bin and linked to the one in the Vacation folder. And again, it selected the one in New Folder.

I'd like to see if this is reproducible. A simple procedure:

1. Take the same media file and copy it to 2 different directories on the same drive.
2. Create 2 bins.
3. Link to one of the files in the first bin.
4. Link to the second file in the other bin.
5. Do a get info on both master clips. Do they point to the same file?

Link to DNxHR codecs

I sent a client footage in DNxHR HQX but he doesn't have the Avid codecs on his system.  Where is the link he can download the free codecs?  When I Google it, it only comes up with DNxHD, not DNxHR.

Motion Tracking Assistance, Please

I've spent the day searching for a good tutorial on how to drop a logo on V2 over a moving image on V1.  V2 is a still image logo and V1 is an end credits roll that I've mixed down from Title Tool to a clip.  I want the logo to track upwards just above the first text in the rolling title and disappear out of the frame as the credits move up.

I've tried following what speedy tutorials I have found (3), and am still without success.  I:

1- Placed the rolling credits mixdown on V1

2- Placed the still logo image above it on V2

3- Dropped PIP into the V2 image above the credits in V1.

4- Opened Effects Editor/Clicked Tracking Tool: The Logo disappears revealing the first lines of text on V1 plus a tracker box.

5- I dragged the tracker box with the X placed over a high-contrast spot.

6- I click "Start Tracking" and watch the + move up the screen with the high-contrast point.

7- I play back and the logo still remains in the center of the screen while the text rolls up behind it - no tracking.

Any schooling would be appreciated.  Thx.

Multicam Slow - Media Composer 2018

$

Hi,

We are running:

Media Composer 2018.12.5 on HP Z840 (Windows 10)

Interplay 2018.11 Client & Engine 2018.9

We were previously on Media Composer 8.4.4 and groups were performing great.

Now across Media Composer 2018 (we have been on 2018.5 and 2018.11) switching to multicam mode is noticeably slower and we regularly receive hardware underrun errors when playing back - despite having 64GB of RAM, 10Gb fibre and 36-cores on a qualified z840. Have tried reducing the number of angles (from 20 to 11) without any luck.

Is anyone else having similar issues on the new Media Composer?

Thanks,

Jonathan

DIDWriter::FinishWrite media file too short for upstream sample count

Whilst trying to consolidate with MC version 2018.12.3 - I get the error:

DIDWriter::FinishWrite media file too short for upstream sample count

What does it mean? How does it help me in any way at all? Is there a place where all the meaningless error messages that MC throws during a normal day can be interpreted into understandable english?

What can I do about it? It seems to me that Avid are always blowing their horn about media management - so how do I get my media managed out of Avid Avid?

This is 2019 folks and we are still getting useless 80's style 'exception violation' programming error messages from the composer - will they ever fix the software? or at least get the consolidate function to work properly so that we can get our media out?

Waveforms cripple my system

$

Hi folks,

I feel waveforms seriously slow down my Avid (fast pc, lots of ram, fast videocard with lots of vram). When I do a 'select to the right' in the timeline, it takes seconds before I can start dragging. This doesn't happen with waveforms off.

This is currently my main 'gripe'with the latest release (2018.12.5) which otherwise is great and stable. I bought a fast PC with all the options just for 'fast editing'on Avid. But it doesn't make much difference with my old system other than faster booting and faster rendering.

Sound familiar?

Cheers,

Arnoud
