HP Z400 vs HP Z420
CURRENTLY: SYMPHONY 6.5 running on HP Z400 W3550. WIN7 64 BIT Quad Core 3.06GHz; 6GB MEM; 320GB 7200rpm internal nVidia FX4800; Integrated SATA RAID; MATROX MINI MAX 3-Port FireWire IEEE HBA Card.
I have been using SYMPHONY 6.5 for several years now on my HP Z400 system detailed above. It has been getting slow but I do not want to upgrade SYMPHONY as it has been very stable. So I am looking at a new computer. After browsing the specs pages on Avid, I see that the HP Z420 is compatible with SYMPHONY 6.5, along with several other brands. As I been with HP for so long, I would like to stick with it. My question is whether the advantgae of Z420 over the Z400 is worth the trouble. The Z420 is Six Core 3.5 Ghz. The Z400 is Quad Core 3.06 Ghz. Will the Z420 be significantly faster? If not, can anyone recommend a better and compatible alternative?

Workflow for H265/HEVC
An client has some drone footage H265/HEVC which is 4K shot at 25fps.
The current workflow is to link in Resolve Studio and transcode.
I read to change the project format to 4K but that does not work for me.
Is there a way to link in Media Composer 2018.12?
I did read this about Cannon ( http://community.avid.com/forums/t/186499.aspx ) but that does not work for this footage

Workspaces resetting in shared user settings
The studio I work at recently upgraded our Media Composer from 8.4.4 to 2018.12.11. For the most part everything is working well (we're working through a couple of hitches, but they're solvable). However, one issue we've run into that we have not been able to figure out is workspaces resetting on different computers.
Here's what I mean - we have a single site-wide shared user setting that everyone operates with. I customized the workspaces to our specifications and everything works great, however when those workspaces are pulled up on certain stations they reset to default for some reason. This is peculiar to only a few stations, but I haven't been able to figure out what is causing the problem (I originally thought they may be operating on a different display resolution then my station, where I had originally built the settings, but that turned out to not be the case).
One thing I did notice is that this issue is specific to the Media Composer "native" workspaces (i.e. Source/Record, Effects, etc.), whereas the custom workspaces I made are unaffected.
Anyone else experience this or have any insight on what is causing this?

Error when attempting to export a QT movie with the 'Same as Source' option
I have a timeline that I am trying to export but I keep getting the same error message. In the export settings window I select 'Quicktime Movie' and 'Same as Source' but everytime I go to save it, a window with the following error appears:
"Video mixdown aborted because the specified video resolution is not compatible with the current project format. Please check the format setting in the project window, or the video resolution in your export settings".
This is strange to me because my project format is set to 1080p/23.976 and all my footage is also 1080p/23.976, and no matter what I try I can't seem to find a solution. All of my footage is imported DNxHR 444 (1920x1080) (except for one DNxHD 444 vfx shot that I have linked to). There are some mixed frame rate clips that I have set to playback at the 'Project's FPS (23.976)' in the Source Settings, although I would assume the frame rate isnt the issue. Anyways I was wondering if anyone has any ideas as to what could be happening here? If it helps, I am using Avid 2020.6. Thanks!

NDI -SDI -Audio Delay
Hi there
When we stream NDI we find the desktop audio and NDI is out of sync by 4 or 5 frames. We can fix this with Desktop Play delay but that's not an ideal solution. Do others find that NDI causes everything to be out of Sync? This is reproducable on a few systems. 2018.12.X
We thought as an alternative we'd use an external box to make the NDI stream from SDI and that has the advantage of being able to do interlaced NDI.... But there seems to be no way then to have the PC audio output as well as SDI..
Our goal is to stream client monitor pictures to some people and have someone else remote desktoping the actual Avid PC

NewBlueTitler doesn't activate
SOLVED: It was resolved for all customers last night. The problem was triggered by the changes with the Avid 2019.6 update. NewBlue were however to fix it retroactively from their server.
Because the fix is coming from the server, we believe the fix should all be automatic and everybody should be good now.
If not, customers should run the NewBlue activation / appmanager and log out / log in.

I installed the NewBlueTitler software (vs. 5) that was in my account. The entry in my account mentions that no serial is required.
However, every title I create carries the red dotted cross indicating that the software is not activated. When I try to activate via the NewBlueTitler Application Manager it doesn't work due to a 'failure to communicate with AvidELF'.
Is this a tempory failure? Or am I missing out something else?

SubCap Font Issue
Hi,
I'm using Media Composer 2019.9
I want to use a font which installed in my PC and work well With Avid Title Tool but
is not listed in SubCap fonts.
How can I fix that and make all my fonts avalble in SubCap as well?

AMA Plug-In Continguous Samples Error???
Folks:
Running AMC
8.1.1 on a Dell XPS with 32 GB RAM, Windows 7 Pro. Of coruse, all was going
along fine until I laid in one last music clip and now the last twenty minutes
or so (or an hour-long documentary episode) gives me the following error
message the instant I try to play it – Exception: Failed
to get the number of contiguous samples from AMA plug-in.
Research I’ve done seemed to indicate this is an audio issue (maybe a n effect gone awry?) so I tried disbling my audio tracks to no avail (obviously AMC isn’t liking some AMA plugin all of a sudden… how do I determine which one it is? Should I then uninstall and try Reinstalling…?).
Since I was nearly done, I tried mixing down – video mixed down fine, audio froze with the error message when it got to that point in the Timeline…
Everything upstream (residing before this error on the Timeline) seems okay. I have two lengthy scenes and this error starts on the first shot of the scene, but then if I scroll and try to play any other shot downstream from there, same error…
Suggestions? As always, thanks.

Hi all!
I'm having trouble with Media Composer crashing after I select and open a project. It doesn't matter if the project is new or old.
I've tried installing these 3 versions. (I did a full uninstall after each install.) Every one of them crashes at the same spot. (20.6.0) Will crash at"reading *user* settings" after project selection.

I previously had a trial version of 2019 installed a few months ago. Everything was working fine. Ultimately I uninstalled because I wasn't working remote yet.

Workflow progressive to interlace (with external color correction and sound editing)
I need some questions answered, perhaps you can help me. I need to know about the workflow on 25p (HD) footage, which has to end up as interlace, as the TV station requires so. Most of the footage is in 25p, but there will also be a few shots from a drone – most likely in 4k 60fps. After editing, everything will go the colorist (works in Davinci) and to the sound editing (Pro Tools). Additionally, there will be some subtitles and closing credits added. Normally, when footage and final file were progressive, I sent the file to the color correction QT in 16 bits (DNxHR 4:4:4) and EDL. For Pro Tools I sent AAF. What’s the best procedure for progressive - interlace? My editing project is in 1080p/25. What do I do after I’ve finished editing? Should I give it to the color correction in interlace (so just change the settings to 1080i/50 and export it to color correction this way)? Or should I send the file to color correction in 25p, and afterwards convert it in Avid? Should I add subtitles and closing credits in interlace? What about the sound postproduction? This is my first time working on a project in a different format than the final one, that’s why I ask so manty specific questions. I will really appreciate any advice from anyone who has mastered this workflow, or has experience with it. My avid version is 2019.9.

Add drop shadow to alpha media
I am trying to work out how to add a nice drop shadow to my imported png that contains an alpha.
I know the 'matte key' effect is automatically added, but this has no drop shadow feature unless you promote to 3d but even then you can't soften it.
Does anyone know of an effect I can replace the 'matte key' effect with that will give me a decent drop shadow?
I have tried some of the boris effects but I can't work them out to get the drop shadow. Duplicating the layer, darkening it and then blurring it is way too much hassle in my eyes. This is a simple effect that should be possible in my eyes....I hope I am missing something!

Re: Always Crashing!
I am a PC user and made a mistake posting to the MAC forum. Anyway yes - took me hours just to finish a simple promotional video. On the PC side I have not seen too many compliaints on crashes.
Funny thing is went into the project today created a new sequence and poked around and it did not crash today.
I will re-create the edit on different timeline shortly to see - the only thing I did was to trash the settings and make new user setting. Let's see what it brings
Will go back to pc forum and post results.

Timecode burn-in issue
Hello,
On MC 2018.12.11, I have to send a video reference to the lab for onlining. I have multiple video tracks (up to five) with crossed dissolves everywhere, it's a bit nasty... The lab asks me to burn the source TC and source clip name for each track. No problem.
The issue is that when I do that with multiple "timecode burn-in" effects, set for each track specifically, it displays V1 TC and source name for V2 even if V2 is empty. Then when there is a clip on V2 it gives me the good V2 TC and source name. I don't understand why it lets V1 informations on other tracks even when they are empty. It's the same for V3, V4, V5. I always have V1 informations until there is a clip on the above track. Each effet is set to the right track, not "current track". I would expect a "N/A" burn-in for these empty tracks.
Am I doing something wrong ? Is it a bug ?

When i try to motion track a title created with the Titler + effect and turn on the tracking option in the effect editor, the tracker automatically de-selects itsself...

Pesky iris hickups
I am near the end of editing quite a long film, and I have several clips, very much needed but marred by damaging iris hiccups where the exposure abruptly changes over the course of 5 or 6 frames. Does anyone know of something, either in BCC or otherwise, with which to iron out these little miseries?

xeon 4 core or i7 8 core?
I sm looking at some refurbished PCs from HP. The majority that they have are xeon. I was wondering if there is any difference with performance if I decided to go with a i7 8 core instead. Looking to pull the trigger in a day or 2 for a new system. I am at the end with my current setup.
