Avid Media Composer and 4K computer screens

Is Avid now supporting 4K or higher resolution computer screens in a decent way? I Couldn’t find much online, and what I have been reading from some time ago, was not so good.

I am updating my editing suite and want to buy a new screen. Because of a bug in Media composer, that sets my saved two screen layout back to the default one screen every time I start Media Composer, I was first leaning forwards to buy aDell U4919DW 49” Ultrawide monitor (2K QHD 5120 x 1440). This way I would have two 27” screens without a bezel on one monitor.

But after some further online research I found out that for less than the price of the ultrawide I can buy two Dell U2720Q (4K 3840 x 2160) screens. This means that I get a lot more screen estate for my money.

The screens will only be used for the Avid interface, not as a preview or program monitor. Other applications that I use are Pro Tools, Photoshop, After Effects, etc.

Can anyone confirm that two 4K 3840 x 2160 screens (this means 7680 x 2160) will be working fine without any zooming or scaling? I hate to buy something new and then take two steps back to get it work properly. Or am I living too much with my head into the clouds and is Avid still running behind on this in 2020?

If you had the choice, which one would you prefer? The two 4K’s, or would it be better to stick with the ultrawide with less resolution for now?

I am running Microsoft Windows 10 Professional 1909 OS Build 18363.535 and a NVIDIA Quadro P4000 on a HP Z840.

Avid GPU Performance

Hi Everyone

I'm hoping to get a bit of advice.

I've just upgraded my computer to the latest Intel 10-core CPU with 32GB RAM, SSD scratch drive and a 10TB RAID 0 media drive.

I decided to stick with the Quadro K620 I had in my last build.

My question is, for general editing (no heavy effects, just 1080/4K documentary style editing), will upgrading the GPU to a P2200 or similiar actually improve performance?

From my understanding, Avid mainly uses the GPU for effects rather than playback so I'm not sure upgrading would be of benefit.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated :)

Avid Link and MC issue

Hey,

I can not log into MC now. Had it working 20 minutes ago. I did a reboot and now it says AVID Activation with Avid Link. And it won't activate. 

I'm in the middle of an edit and this is happening. Please help!

Exporting clips

Hey guys!  I have an old project that was recorded on DV tape.  I recently opened it up in media composer and it opens perfectly after 15 years!  That is truly amazing!  I think all footage was saved as .OMF

Here is what I want to do:

I would like to export all of the footage out avid in a lossless format.  There is quite a bit of clips.

I have tried two different methods.  One was exporting quicktime same as source.  It seems to export lossless but I am not sure.  For some reason it looked deinterlaced.  Does quicktime deinterlace content. The other method was to export an AAF file.  I transcoded the media to DV25 in order to get the clips out.  This footage was all interlaced.   

Any ideas on how to export?

Reordering clips in a Group Clip for multicam

Is there a way of reordering the clips in group clip when doing multicam editing? I do most of my interview edits through multicam with the visuals coming two or three cameras and the audio coming from a seperate audio recorder.

Process as follows:

1) Import all media. Select all clips, Autosync with Group Clip selected (making sure the Zoom audio track is at the top of the pile) sync using waveform analysis.

2) Edit multicam mode into sequence using quad display

Once I've made a group clip, is there any way or changing the order of clips, or even replacing individual clips in that group?

OpenIO_NDI vs DX Nitris

Hello,

 

I have a case that I want to stream using Open IO NDI video from Media Composer to someone on my local network in another room.

 

But, unfortunately, the option become available only when I turn off my DX Nitrs from the Device Manager.

While i do it by button HW/SW Enable/Disable there is no NDI option. 

 

Is there any way to do some ready present in the settings in MC so that the turn off DX does not have to restart the entire computer?

we have some drone media that I cant link or import. (MC 8.8.4)

DJI_0001.MOV

VLC says this:

Codec: H264 - MPEG-4 AVC (part 10) (avc1)

Resolution: 1920x1090

Decoded format: Planar 4:2:0 YUV

Edit1:

Console says:

The FOURCC video code of avc1 is not natively supported.

Edit2: got it "work" on a Mac. But even on the mac this console message appear...

But the ppl who have this problems have only PC's, so it would be nice if it coult work without a mac..

MC 2020.4 through .6 - "Domain resolution failed!" [SOLVED]

Ever since I installed 2020.4 on a clean install of Windows 10, I've been getting the "Domain resolution failed!" error:

Domain resolution failed!  Please send this data to Avid Engineering:

(At first I thought it might be related to my user settings because the problem went away when using a different user but it eventually came back anyway...) 

 

After some time troubleshooting, I've realised when the error always occurs: If I trim OR move a clip WITH THE MOUSE, with video monitoring enabled AND - this is the important part - full-screen playback enabled.

 

I have an nVidia Quadro P2000 (diver 431.02) running three identical Benq monitors @ 2560x1440 resolution.

Why is AVID Titler Plus impossible to work with?

I am a fan of AVID and its standard tools. But now i am working in a 4K project and I am losing tons of time just by making a simple lower third title. It needs to animate a bit, but it just wont do what I want. Just make is move up or down seems to be impossible. With the old Title Tool, I was able to do that in a minute. Now I am frustrated because after an hour it still won't do a simple move.

I am really frustrated Super Angry. How can a professional company like AVID make such a bad tool.

Why can't I make a simple move of my title? Is it me?

Grrrrr.

Performance Nvidia 451.48 drivers

Hi all,

Good news for once. Recently found that the lastest nVidia 451.48 drivers on HP z4 workstations with p2000 quadro cards result in a big performance increase with MC 2018.12.10 (probably also 2020.x but not tested) and older versions of MC.

No only does the whole system feel more snappy, render times have improved by around 50% for many effects including Boris FX Sapphire.

Has anybody else also noticed this?

MC won't open anymore

Hi, so I uninstalled newblue titler as there is no real need for it I didn't purchase the standalone. I also deleted MC installer that I downloaded as I have MC 2019.12 installed already. I was cleaning my download folder on my harddrive.  Now for some reason I can not open media composer up. It did for a day open up through avid link but now that way isn't working. Its trying to install but as mentioned it is already installed on my pc. I get a the message

 

" The feature you are trying to use is on a network resource that is unavialable. click Ok to try again or enter an alternate path to a folder containng the installation package Avid Media Composer. msi in the box below. 

 

Any idea of what went wrong? I will download 2019.12 again and try to install it over itself and just not delete that download but I am curious as to why this even happened.

timeline play jumping all over the place

I've got a strange issue that I cant work out whats causing it, and its making it impossible to edit.
The timeline jumps anywhere from 2-20 seconds forwards when I hit spacebar to play.
MC 2020.6

Have tried newly created user settings, full uninstall of mc and reinstall, deleted mcstate etc

What do the symbols on the timeline movie mean?

The gopro8 file was pulled to the timeline through transcoding, but what does it mean that the symbol appeared on the film? After the effect render, the green dot on the original symbol is gone.

Is there an easy way to rotate a clone...

Sometimes I'll need to clone out cameramen, minicams etc. In this example there's a cameraperson in front of a tree. I'll clone another part of the tree and replace him with it, no problems.

What I'd like to be able to do is to rotate that cloned selection easily within that effect to help hide some of the similarities and make it more convincing. Rotating the shape just does that - rotate only the shape but not the contents of the shape. 

Is there any way to rotate the contents of the shape too? Am I missing something?  Obviously I could animatte things and 3dwarp things but I was wondering if there is a built in feature of the paint effect that I'm missing that lets me stay in the same effect. And if not - why not?!

Deleting unwanted audio tracks and modifying clip data

If one has logged and captured a clip as V1 A1-A2 (2T mono) and after capturing find out that one does not want or need one of the audio tracks, can this be deleted and the clip data modified so it no longer shows the unwanted (and deleted) audio track?

Can a clip that has been logged and captured as 2-track mono be reconfigured to be 2T-stereo, without recapturing?

Jusdt a thought... :)

Problem with 2020.5 - Video compression not recognized

I encountered an issue in 2020.5 where a project with source media originally compressed in DnxHD 220X is now showing up as "Not Supported" in the video column bin display. Any sequence referencing that source media is unplayable and the media itself is unplayable. This problem occurred after I upgraded from 2019.11 to 2020.5.

The error message is attached.

Any idea how to fix or why this happened in the first place?

Source settings - sub frame audio nightmare...

Rather than the intuitive way of introducing subframe adjustments for audio i.e. doing it directly in the timeline on a per clip basis where any sane person would want to be able to adjust audio - what we have is this total mess of a system whereby I have to matchframe back to the source clip then adjust the clip with seemingly no reference for the surrounding audio that I wish to slip the sync to. 

Is this really what Avid have come up with? I have to slip the sync for the ENTIRE clip at once? Thereby offsetting everything in my timeline rather than just the section I want?! Then even if that is what I want, I have to go back to the timeline and check to see if the slippage has got me in sync or not and then if it hasn't I have to go back in to the source settings and adjust again until I do get it right? Is this honestly how it works? Am I missing something simple here? I really really hope I am because if not then this is a total waste of time. 

This should be implemented in the timeline, just as slipping by frames currently is just with more precision. It's so obvious that's how this shoud be acheived. Can someone please explain that I've got this wrong and that it makes perfect sense like this? Between this, the titler+ and the shape based colour correction I feel like I'm taking crazy pills!
