JPEG 2000

Hi,

Just testing Avids Jpeg 2000 codec for the first time and I get metadata back from FFMPEG like this.

 

 

Metadata:

   product_name    : Avid Media Composer 8.2.6

   company_name    : Avid Technology, Inc.

   timecode        : 03:43:19:20

Duration: 00:00:07.36, start: 0.000000, bitrate: 61549 kb/s

   Stream #0:0: Video: jpeg2000, yuv422p10le, 1920x540, SAR 1:2 DAR 16:9, 25 tbr, 25 tbn, 25 tbc

 

So this must be wrong right?

Maybe not - 10bit JPEG2K file sizes are approximately HALF of 8bit 50Mbit/XDCAM MPEG2 - which would work out logical if the material is indeed 1:2 SAR with a resolution of 1920x540. Half the info was trashed.

If the Media Composer JP2K was 1920x1080 - then I would expect files at roughly the same size, as the codec is more advanced it can logically pack 10 bits of information into files at roughly the same size as 8bit XDCAM.

But these files are 1/2 the size and Media Composer reports 10bit 1920x1080 - what's going on with JPEG 2K in MC? where are the specs?

Report analysis: Warning adware/malware can make MC crash at startup.

When MC crashes and you get a pop-up window to send a report to Avid, those are actually checked, and I was looking into some of those logs and one that was quite frequent was crashing because of adware/spyware.

I could see it was crashing on: "lavasofttcpservice64.dll" after doing some quick googling I found that it's a Malware/Spyware

So don't forget to keep your System Clean from bad malware, and adware, this goes for both Windows, and Mac systems.

Since I don't know who sent in those reports, I can't inform the persons who was suffering from this about it, as the data is collected anonymously, so I don't know who is affected.

That's why i'm writing a small update here.

Here's a fix that I found on how to repmove this specific lavasofttcpservice64.dll crash:

1. Start Command Prompt as an administrator by right-clicking it and select Run as administrator.

2. Enter this command to reset the network adapter (end with the Enter key):

netsh winsock reset

3. Restart the computer.

4. Please, delete these two files:

C:\WINDOWS\system32\LavasoftTcpService64.dll
C:\WINDOWS\SysWOW64\LavasoftTcpService.dll

MC8.2 - Background Transcoding fails

Today I experienced a severe error with background-transcoding AMA-linked XDCAM-EX formatted files. I have marked a number of AMA-linked clips and selected Transcoding into DNxHD-120 (720P50). The clips were put into the bin and initially showed off-line status. I can observe the green circle rotating (indicating that off-line seervice is running a job). After completion of the first clip, an error message pops up, saying:

File 'M:\Avid MediaFiles\_bg.1\151_0390_01.xc.......mxf' not found. If I click on the "More"button of the erro message, the message is expanded with an additioanl line, saying:

Exception: SYS_ERROR, status:2, msg:The system cannot find the mentioned file

(Remark: I have translated the German text into English).

If I look into the indicated Media Files directory, the "missing" .mxf-file is present and can be played with QuickTime player.

If I run foreground-transcoding, all is o.k.

I have then tested background-transcoding with variations of settings. As long as I select only one disk drive for video and audio, background-transcoding runs fine. As soon as I select seperate disk-drives for video and audio, the above mentioned error pops up.

The error is serious, as the error window pops up every time again and again with the same missing file indication. I have to use Windows task manager to shut down Media Composer.

Does anybody has an idea, why it fails with seperate disk drives for video and audio? With previeous versions of MC it has never failed.

MC to premiere / After Effects

we need to transfer edits from Media Composer 8.2 / 8.6 to Premiere and finally After Effects CC17/14for Compositing,

Right now we export  AMA Files XAVC Mxf.

we've tested a lot with aaf files as embedded, or media files folders, or transcoded, or consolidated - every possible opportunity - without solid success.

simple sequences - without any effects showed up as missing files, cant be linked to the media, often audio clips maybe 8seconds log showed up in premiere  6seconds, rest 2sec missing from the clip,

Anyone success in transfering -simple- Avid Sequences to Premiere? Someone using programs like Automatic Duck?

i got this message... so far there are two actions that will pop up this error....

1)If i click Project window>format> mask
2)If i change quality on the bottom right icon of the timeline (the green 10 bit/8bit/ yellow/ yellow&green thingy)

does anyone know what does that error mean?

mac and pc mc at same time?

I have a mc on a macbook pro and was thinking about getting a cheap used qualified pc laptop as a backup for editing on the road in case the mac crashes... can i install my avid on both my macbook pro and a qualified used pc laptop and have them work with only one license?  (of course the two would never be on at the same time since the pc is only used incase the macbook fails.)

the used pc I was thinking about is a qualified Lenovo ThinkPad W530 2.6 GHz

i bought avid artist control 2 days ago and i still cannot manage to connect it to my media composer.

I tried to find tutorials or guides at the internet but had no luck. Can anyone give me a help on this please?

Avid using second Graphics card for GPU acceleration

While setting up a system to test resolve I ended up having a Quadro 600 card as the GUI card (not a supported Avid card and no Avid GPU acceleration) And a Quadro 4000 card in a different PCIe slot for Resolve to use as a GPU farm (although it won't as the BM spec driver isn't supported for that card despite the config info)

The great thing is launching MC shows a supported card found and the Video settings in MC show the Quadro 400 card being used for effects.

In theory this should be an even better setup for MC as the GUI card is now takingt he screen redraw work leaving the Quadro 4000 card free just for GPU work.

as i am trying to export any footage from any hard disk drive as a quicktime reference, i am receiving the following error:

exception: ADD_MEDIA_SHARE_FAILED

 

Anyone has an idea what do i need to do to fix this?

Stick with Win 7 - or move to Win 10?

Next week I'll move from MC 7 to 8, and so I think about reinstalling the OS and upgrade from Win 7 to Win 10.

Are there any strong reasons to move to Win 10?

 

* I'd like to run Avid MC 8x, BCC (=Sapphire) Plugins, Adobe CC
* and maybe Fusion and Cinema4d
* There is an AJA IO Express attached

stereo export AS-11 OP1a

Does anyone have a solution or a good workflow for delivering an MFX stereo audio file for broadcasters?

I understand that AS-11 and OP1a export their mono tracks direct but this is not how I edit a sequence.  I have some mono and some stereo tracks, some have track effects on and I have track effects on the main output. So all in all, creating mixdowns is a time consuming can of worms and very error prone.

At best I could export a Wav file and re import but surly there is a better way.

I noticed there was an OP1a dropdown on the AMA exporter ( next to AS-11).  This has a stereo mix on it but produces and unplayable file  ( "undf" codec in VLC)

 

Any clues? Thanks in advance.

Moving the Intel Pro/1000 PT to another slot.

Hello....

I am currently running a HP z820 with Media Composer Nitris DX and recently have found that I need to beef up my GPU (currently a Quadro 4000). I am running into a little snag where many of the bigger and better cards will hang over the adjacent pcie slot that the GPU sits (slot 2). In this slot (3) currently sits an Intel Pro/1000 PT Dual port card that I use to connect to the our Isis. I could live with just the single NIC port built into the z820 to connect, but as I am working with more and more UHD material, I wouldn't mind the faster connection.

I was wondering if anyone has come across this problem before and if a) has found a way to get the Pro/1000 card to see the Isis from slot 4 or b) used slot 6 for the graphics card, leaving slot 2 empty.

Any help would be most welcome.

HELP! Title tool in MC 8.6.5 on windows 7 will not open.

Hi all,

At a customer we are upgrading an ISIS, Interplay, Newscutter, Interplay capture, Airspeeds... system and adding mediacentral UX, iNews Command and iNews over the weekend. 3 guys running all day between clients, remote desktop, vnc and KVM's.

All goes well but we have one BIG issue.

In MC 8.6.5 on windows 7 64 the title tool and marquee immediately crash when trying to open. Trying to open the apps directly from C:\Program Files\Avid\Avid Media Composer\TitleTool results in a error saying:

The application was unable to start correctly (0xc00007b).

The error used to happen on MC 6.5.1 (or 6.5.0.1) but that fix has nothing to do with this.

Now... we know it has to do with the windows 7 image we use on the HP z400 gen2. On other HP z230's Z420's all is fine. Some dll from some kb update for windows 7 must be missing. We could create a new image to see if that works but that ill take us hours we don't have.

Anybody got a clue which (dll) file might be corrupt? I will try to see if running windows updates resolves the issue, and contact support (code red was opened, code blue soon to follow) but in the mean time I thought to ask the community as well.

XAVC from Sony FS5 won't link

Hello - I can't get Sony FS5 footage to link. I'm on Symphony 6.5 and I've instlled PDZK-MA2_v2.4 AMA plug-in (which is supposed to be compatible with Symphony 6.5) and the Avid says its a unsupported codec when I try to link to it. It's 50Mbps and I saw in the read me file "50Mbps is not supported". I've looked at everything on the InterWeb regarding this and no one else has mentioned the 50Mbps issue. The post on the forum are old and I wonder/hope someone has some insight into this issue with XAVC. Of course I can see these fine in Premiere and even WMP. They are 1080i MXF files. Its a big job so using another program to convert is less than ideal, and I really shouldn't have to ajump through those hoops. I've tried the new Nesbit AMA pig ins too without success. I see the AMA in the console. Please chime in!!! Thanks.

Came across the following error message for the first time today after consolidating a project to an external drive for archive.

 

Exception: MXF_DIDMapper::ReadRange - Essence Data Key not found at expected offset

 

I have never seen this message before and wondered if anyone else has come across it and what it means ?

 

The original project and timeline are fine.

 

This has occurred following an avid update, but that may be a red herring.

 

I have tried deleting the consolidation and starting again but the same issue.

 

Any help appreciated as to what to look for.

Archiving Projects

Hi,

Does anyone know of a solution to archive media composer projects?, we need to to free up drive space so are looking for a solution to archive the project files and media to a external NAS box (removing the original files in the process) and then restore them at a later date if needed.

Any suggestions would be great. Thanks

BCC10 Pan & Zoom missing reference rectangles...

Hi all,

Not quite sure how to describe this but here goes.  I've got a client using BCC10 (in trial mode currently).  He's using pan and zoom.  On my fully licenced version when I load up an image and start doing some moves on it I get given red rectangles that turn green when I hover over them which show me visually what my moves are doing - a preview rectangle I guess you call it.  In his trial version he does not see them, he has to use the sliders in the effects window which is less intuitive.  

Is this a limitation of the trial version or is there something else at work here? We are both on the same version (10.0.0074).

I'll have him try with new user settings but has anyone else seen this before?

Best way to feather the edges of a crop...

I have a pan and zoom clip sitting over a background layer.  I'd like to feather the edges of the image so it's not such a hard transition between the picture and the background layer.  What's the best way to do this?  I'm using BCC Pan and Zoom.
