Tonight, I bought my first control surface. I won't say what model it is until later otherwise you might not read any further.
I've really missed having a mixing console for my audio work, so I got it for use with Sonar. It took little time to set up and get working in Sonar so I did some rough mixes on several songs. It was so much easier than doing the same thing with the mouse and keyboard. Ugh. I'm glad I won't have to do that again.
Once I was through running this thing through its paces in Sonar, I decided to see if I could get it to work in MC. With a little experimenting (which also didn't take long), I found that if I set MC as if the Digi 002 was connected and if I set the control surface to its factory-loaded "scene" 4 (one of 4 sets of preset configurations which are user-programmable), this unit would control level with the faders and panning with the knobs in MC's Audio Mixer. With data on what control messages are used by other functions on the Digi 002, I could program other functions on this controller.
Now, to the make and model of this unit. I had written it off myself based on what I had read online about it. It looked far too small and it was "far too inexpensive" to be any good from what I could tell. When I looked at one up-close and operated the faders and knobs, I decided that it was much better than I had thought. The faders are very smooth - about as smooth or smoother than those on the MCI recording/mixing console I used at the studio. What I bought for about $60 is a Korg nanoKontrol. Yep, I know that sounds like it's no good but for anyone who doesn't have $1000, $5000, $10000 or more for a Mackie or a Digidesign, this one is worth a look. It has 9 control strips and transport controls. The 9 strips have a fader, a knob and 2 buttons. Multiple units can be connected (USB, powered by the bus) to add to the number of channels available.
And, no, this isn't supported by Avid. This is just a tip from someone who's already taken a shot at doing things "on the cheap."
Moving software node dongle
Hey Gang – I’m upgrading my Z800 to W10 to upgrade to 2020.5 and have a few questions.
(1) I have a software node “dongle” w/Symphony. When I deactivate my old MC license and reinstall on W10 will my software node, perpetual license transfer over? There is no physical dongle.
(2) HP docs say to create a W10 ISO flash drive formatted as GPT for UEIF and then NTFS file format. I’m installing a new 1TB SSD, do I format that as GPT for UEIF / NTFS? (I used to have an IT guy that handled this, and I’m unfamiliar with GPT.) Or do I just format as NTFS?

This is my edit site: Windows 10 Pro 64/V 2004, Avid Media Composer 2020.5, BMD DeckLink Mini Monitor 11.5.1.
Upgraded from 2020.4 to 2020.5 and soon had troubles.
Classic Title Tool create a fade-in title (first Kf is with Opacity set to 0)
No more able to export a QT Reference file if at the beginning of the sequence there's a filler (empty space). QT reference opened in QT shows white screen, and send it to Sorenson Squeeze, if I have 1" of filler, the compressed file appear with 1" of the 1st frame in the sequence freezed.
NDI doesn't goes out from this PC. It works fine, cause I'm able to link it to Skype using Newtek Virtual Input, but running Studio Monitor on another computer it shows a connection to the edit machine, but screen is black. Completely disabled Firewall/Antivirus on the edit machine to be sure. NDI goes out very well using VLC plugin and playing a video file inside.
On a AMC 2020.5 installed on a Mac, same procedure with an opposite direction, all works fine, I'm able to use NDI output on Mac, and see timeline on PC.
Did you experienced something similar or it's just me?

Transcoding Bug? Linked Stereo-Audio
Hey All,
either iam doing something wrong, forgot to change some settings, or i stumbled on a bug.
I have a linked mp3 Stereo-Audio in my Timeline, that i wanted to transcode.
But when MediaComposer is done with it, i have double-Mono audio.
So i get a Stereo-File with the pan already set to left/light, but both channels
contain the sum of the source file.
Does someone have the same problem? Is that a known issue?
It certainly was news to me.

MOV export - audio hidden error.
Hi,
Im really glad the new engine for h264 MOV previews is here. It seems like 90s to export timeline in almost realtime for preview using QT export.
But there is a huge issue: my exports SOMETIMES doesnt contain complete audio. For example second half of the movie is silent. Its problem since no error is generated so I cant trust the files will be OK anymore and MOV export is unusable for me.
(PS: it would be excelent to have aac sound option. To have to export uncompressed sound for h264 previews doesnt make any sense).
4k playback
I have a question for Avid users viewing your 4k playback via blackmagic products. I am running MC and DR on the latest Macbook Pro and want to output to a 4k OLED TV. Do I have to buy the UltraStudio 4K Mini or can I output my video to the TV through the Blackmagic eGPU Pro HDMI port? Thanks for your time.

Hi folks and thanks again for an excellent resource. Here's my predicament -
I have been working on an eight-hour documentary and my media (whiole mostly contained on two drives) occasionally got spread over several others (for some reason I'd be layering in transitions, effects, etc. - then notice Avid had defaulted to my OS drive or something).
I am planning on travelling across the coutnry to my producer's location where we will sit down and do a true final cut - but I'd prefer NOT to take all of my hardware just to be sure I don't come acorss that pesky "Medis Offline" error message...
Is there a way I can have AMC open my project and I have it locate ALL media from ALL my attached drives - then transfer (and link, so AMC can find it properly) to another drive or two? That way I can simply take my hard drives tgo some other system with Media Composer and re-commence work there...?
Or am I out of my mind?

Consolidate/Transcode Part of a Clip
I have AMA linked an extremely long clip and only need a small portion of it. I made a subclip of the section I wanted and then consolidated the subclip to my media drives. But when I unplugged the camera card with the original AMA clip, the consolidated subclip went offline.
How can create & save just a portion of a clip and then get rid of the original?
Changing Default Title Tool Effect Attributes? Automatic Fade Up Unwanted
Something changed and now whenever I control-click on a title to edit it, then save it, the Foreground opacity gets changed -- a very slow fade up is added.
This would be a great feature -- being able to change the default effect characteristics of all new titles -- if I knew how to change it.
But I've somehow set an annoying effect on all titles and it's taking extra time now to turn the transparency off manually for ever title I create.
Anyone know how to change this default effect edit attribution so every new title I make doesn't include a long fade up?
Bulk Edit improvements
Bulk Edit is a great new feature I'm really happy with, but I think it could need a few improvments to make it more useful.
The one thing I'm missing the most is the option to modify current values.
Two examples:
- remove the last 3 digits of the current name
- search and replace strings in the current name (e.g "Copy.01")
I hope this is something Avid is working on to make this great new feature more powerful and save us editors a lot of tedious work!

Consolidate Fails with Pink Clips
I can watch through my entire timeline with no problems, but because I linked some clips, I cannot consolidate my timeline. I get errors about the formats not matching. What's the easiest way to select a sequence, and re-encode all the pink clips that are causing me problems?
Bugs and issues with avid 2020.4
Hi all Avid 2020.4 here are a few bugs that I'm encountered
1. Trying to batch transcode (with keep original frame rate) files and after a few transcodes I'm receiving this error message. i've changed from UME link to quick time, still did the same thing, opened a project with the same FPS still did it. Picture included.
Also it linked some files twice once in two different video links.
2. When i mark a few clips in the bin and try to right click the marks disappear and only one file is marked. the only time that it works is if I keep pressing the shift on my keyboard while I press the right click.
3. When i try to press on the color box and right click it doesn't give me the color but gives me the right click menu. Only when I press on another line in the bin and then return to the line it gives me the option.
If you haven't insights about this bugs and how it can be avoided.

I will start with the fact that I'm using a 32 ", 4K monitor, because it may matter.
I would like to signal two annoying inconveniences.
Every time I use Input -> Source Browser or Input Media a small window opens that I need to scale.Why Avid doesn't keep the size of this window after closing the AC.
A similar thing is with the Mode window, which always opens in the upper left corner and not where it was used.

My experience of MC 2019.12 is pretty stable except for one recurring error that crashes my system at least once a day.
I've been unable to pin down the exact cause but it seems to usually happen when scrubbing over clips with FrameFlex or Pan and Zoom effects applied. All my footage came in as UHD and I have the project knocked down to 1080p/25
Is anyone experiencing the same and if so, any solutions? My currently solution is to force auto-save every 2mins so I don't lose everything once Media Composer goes into an unrecoverable crash

Avid 2020.6 UME export missing?

Since 2020.4 Ive use the MOV with UME export. Today i updated to .6 and saddly my preset for UME is blank and there is no MOV to choose from the dropdown menu. Is it moved somewhere else or is it a bug?

Media Composer 2020.6 - FrameFlex issue (sort of continued from 2020.5)
The FrameFlex scaling issue is still not resolved in 2020.6. The issue has changed however and from what I was able to find out, the core of the problem lies in RGB->YUV conversion. From my latest response to Avid support:
After some more testing with various file formats (codecs) I found out that the issue is present only for RGB source clips (DNxHR444 or Prores4444), but not for any other YUV clips (DNxHR LB/SQ/HQ/HQX or Prores LT/422/HQ). This would indicate that the issue is probably related to RGB->YUV conversion in render process. I tried to switch the working space from YUV709 to RGB709 and the issue is gone for all clips/formats/codecs! So it looks the problem is only in RGB->YUV conversion, not the other way around, since all clips rendered correctly in RGB709 space (even YUV clips).
So after all those experiments the new issue report is very narrow - when using RGB DCI 2K scope source clips in YUV HD1080p timeline, the preview on the timeline looks fine, but as soon as I render the clips (or they are underlying part of the render in upper video levels), which involves RGB -> YUV conversion, the picture gets corrupted.
Hope this helps at least as a workaround for anyone facing the FrameFLex problem (it affects ALL of my DCI 2K exports linked to HD1080 projects...).
