Project with 24fps and 30fps Footage

$

Hello,

I'm working on a project tha spands video shot from 2010 through 2016. The video was shot on many different devices and different frame rates. Cameras used were iPhone with SD footage at 30fps, iPhone at HD at 30fps, Sony CX100 at 59i fps, Canon Vixia 30 & 24fps, Sony RX100 at 24fps, etc. So you can see lots of cameras and different frame rates. So what is the best way to hadle all these frame rate in a project? The footage from 2010 thru 2013 is primarily 30fps, but video from 2014 thru 2016 is mixed mainly from iPhone 30fps and Sony RX100m2 at 24fps. I'm currently using Avid Media Composer 8.6 and plan to export the files mainly as single year MP4 files so they can be played on a computer or on a HD TV using a USB jump drive. I do have one request for all files to be put on a Blu-Ray disc.

So I need help with how to setup this project. Do I set up the project as a 30fps or 24fps? Whats' the best way to get the footageinto the project? Any advice would be greatly apprciated.

Thanks,
Terry

The first thing noticed is that MC5 is a new beast.

Here are some AVCHD files to try.

The first 3 files are mts.

Because MC5 is capable of importing AVCHD files.

Update:

1) The import is slow but the files are coming fine into MC.

2) NTSC clips can't be imported into a PAL project as MC detects the framerate and stops you.

3) Once come into MC they play fantastic.

Exporting Sequence Comments

Hi All, this seems such an obvious thing to want to do but can't find anything on how to do it.  I have a sequence of talking heads which I have added locators comments to the start of each clip describing what the person is talking about (shown below):

Can anyone offer any advice on how I can export this to an excel or word doc so that someone could search the comments and?  do I need to use some 3rd party software?  I have tried exporting a txt and xml but there is zero formatting in the txt doc which makes it unusable and am struggling to open an xml in Excel.  Any help is much appreciated

Thank you.  John

USB Microphones for Guide VO Recording with NITRIS?

$

Hey everyone,

A few of the suites need microphones attached for editors to lay down some guide VO.

Usually I'd go XLR in into a preamp or the NITRIS, but since we are buyign new microphones en mass I'm looking at a cheaper solution and have come across the 'Snowball iCE USB microphone'.

Has anyone gotten these to work easily with Avid?

Can you record guide VO in an empty sequence? Does AVID see USB peripherals as recording inputs?

Thanks for any help at all.

I don't know whether this is an option or whether its safer to buy pre-amps, and condenser microphones instead.

**Research tells me the Nitris I/O overrides other inputs (such as USB) but that was 2012 - so I'm hoping perhaps things have changed

Avid Confusing Correct nVidia Driver for MC8.7

$

Avid gives confusing instructions (to me at least) regarding installation of correct nVidia video card driver for MC8.7.  Here is history of my situation.

Avid licensing/installation support helpfully took control of my ZBook 15 and installed MC8.7 for me (I do this rarely and can make mistakes).  My OS is WIN 7 Pro 64 bit.

Then I found readme to install correct QT version (7.7.9) and nVidia driver (I have K2100M on Z Book).

Readme "compatibility chart" says for MC8.7 install nVidia driver 353.82 and I know MC is very picky about drivers/settings for video card (my current nVidia driver is 347.52 I used with MC7).

Next readme gives instructions to "install the nVidia display driver:" as follows;

1. Navigate to Program Files\Avid\Utilities\nVidia and double click folder for your OS (WIN7 Pro 64 bit in my case).

2. Double click the file for the applicable driver.  In my case when I followed step 1 it opened a folder which was titled Display Driver v 362.13--different one from compatibility guide recommended 353.82.   I am not good at installing drivers and so forth so I stopped at that point before continuing with installation.

So questions are: (1) should I continue with installing driver 362.13 (maybe that is more current version to use with MC8.7 which was included in utilities folder???;  or (2) do I need to go somewhere (where??) to find and install driver 353.82; (3) or, maybe if I just doubleclick on folder labelled Display Driver v 362.13 does it actually install 353.82

I did call installation support to try to see if they installed correct utilities folder but person said they don't handle that sort of issue.

Thank you,

Video Scrolling seems to stop

Hi There

Keep getting a problem where when scrolling through video the Viewer remains on a still image.  I trash the MC State etc, but it comes back again and again.  It only seems to be on one project, a bunch of GH4 footage, transcoded into DNxHD 120.  I'm using Avid 6.5 on a HP Z400, Windows 7.  Any ideas how to make it stop?

Thanks in advance.

problem with moving user settings

$

I have already read a lot about user settings. I know where to find them, how to copy and paste them manually, hot to export and import them inside Media Composer. But I still cannot manage to move them to another work station the way I want it. At work we have many different work stations so I would like to build my user setting once and move it to all the other work stations. I want to do this by exporting it to a server that all work stations are connected with. That is no problem. I also would like to be able to adjust the setting to every individual work station because we've got monitors different in size and number at each work station. And here's the problem:

When I export the user setting on the work station on which I created it, selecting "Group", it seems that when I change something on another work station, the changes are saved until I close the project. When I open the project again, all changes are reset to the original setting.

When I export the user setting selecting "Personal", then all changes are saved, but they are saved to every user setting on all work stations. That means, that I won't be able to have different settings based on my original user setting.

When I export the user setting as Local, then only my keyboard settings are moved to the other work stations. My work spaces don't come with the user setting.

Let me give you an example: I want to have exactly the same keyboard settings on every single work station. But I have to re-order the windows depending on how many monitors I work with and how big or small they are. On only 1 monitor I also have to work with less tools than on 2 monitors, because there is not enough room. So if I do not want to rebuild my keyboard settings on all the 12 work stations, it would be easier to do this once and then export my user settings. But at the moment that means to me either working on every work station with my original settings and re-ordering the work spaces everytime I open a project. Or having all my changes saved and re-ordering the work spaces everytime I go to another work station. None of these alternatives is satisfying. Also, I'd like to be able to update for example my keyboard settings to all the other user settings on all work stations, for example when I change a key.

The only way I could imagine would be to export the user setting, go to every work station and import it, then delete it from the server, so that no work station can affect another. And changes to the keyboard settings would have to be done manually on every work station.

Does anybody know a way to help me?

Thanks a lot.

Chris

Got a new laptop for a flight then the worst happened

Last night I installed Media composer, ran it, everything was perfect.

Ran it a few times and everything was great.

Of course when I got on the plane, the activation window came up.

You guys need deactivate all like Adobe creative cloud (I subscribe to this as well as avid) and iTunes.

Licencing issues on weekends or after hours can be detramental and other companies offer de-activate all.

You're anti piracy methods can be a burdon to those who are paying you.

AMA link problems in 8.6.1 with Canon C300 footage

Hi there, I'm new here, so hopefully I'm putting this in the right place. I currently run 2 pretty new avid setups, one laptop MC 8.5.3, and one desktop MC 8.6.1 I've been using the laptop without problem for about 6 months, the desktop is brand new. Ive had no problem using the AMA link feature to link to footage shot on our Canon C300. It always links fine as: AVC High 422 Intra (1080P) and is immediately viewable in the source monitor. I just consolidate it to a drive and everything is fine.

The new desktop machine however seems to link differently. First it's a slightly different interface called called 'Source Browser' instead of 'Link to media' and you can't seem to be able to select what sort of vision you're hoping to link to eg. Quicktime/Canon etc... But anyway, you can see the Canon folder filled with the footage and when you 'Link' it succesfully fills your source bin with all of the right clips, fine so far except that unlike the laptop, it wants to link them in as AVC Intra 100 (1080i), and when you throw them in the source monitor you get a black screen and a: CDCIReader_UNKNOWN_COMPRESSION_TYPE error message.

As far as I can tell, both machines have the same AMA plugins, and link settings, and both project formats are 1080i/50

I have screen grabs of the process if that helps, but I can't work out how to attach them to this post

Decklink mini monitor sluggish responsiveness

$

Hi all, I'm running Media Composer 8.4.4 with a decklink mini monitor and Blackmagic Desktop Video driver version 10.5.4

AVID seems to be very sluggish in this configuration, especially when entering trim mode, using trim mode with J-K-L keys, or dragging edits manually with the mouse. When I turn off the hardware video output, performance returns to normal, so it seems pretty clear that the decklink is the culprit.

I'm wondering if anyone has noticed this problem too, or has had success with a different driver version. I've played briefly with some other drivers versions, but many seem to crash Avid outright.

Thanks,
Matt

Windows vs OSX for Avid editing

I know this topic has been discussed over and over over the last 20 years.  The last time our studio cut on PCs was in 2008 and after that we decided it was time for OSX. OSX has been great for us but with Apple being non-commital toward their mac pro line it's time I look into PCs again.

Are PC users have a good experience with Media Composer 8.6.x?  We cut features at DNxHD115 and have a staff of 5 each running MC on each project. Up to 15 users total working on a Nexis.

Our mac pros cost $5900 each and for that I could get a killer Dell or HP system.

Any thoughts you could share?

Thanks.

Avid Application Manager Going Crazy

$

Here’s the weird stuff that happened to me: I’m using MC 8.5.1 (updated a few weeks ago). So I start Avid and oddly up comes the activation flag, okay do it, up comes the manager, which shows I’m activated (perpetual licence) which means I can’t activate, but MC won’t start – catch 22. Call Avid, some corrupt files in AppManger, delete those, works fine.

Next day, same issue except I also notice the computer is working hard although no apps are running. I open task manager and the C drive is running 100%, the RAM is 19GB and the CPU is 60%. The C drive is filling up fast and I can’t stop it. So I do the virus / malware search, nothing. I track it down to the AppData file which is being filed with thousands of AppMan_jetty folders,eg;

C:\Users\Michael\AppData\Local\Temp\AppMan_jetty-TEMP-old1814571676

Eventually filling the drive to 100% capacity. And guess what was creating all those files? Avid Application Manager. Anyone else had this sort of experience and have any ideas how to stop it?

Updating to latest version necessary with annual subscription?

When we purchased the dongle version of Media Composer, it was generally agreed that it wasn't a good idea to update to a newer version in the middle of a project. I don't know if that is still the wisdom with subscriptions. I have an annual subscription. I installed 8.6.3 and have upgraded every release until 8.6.5. I am unwilling to install 8.6.7 because I am at a critical point in my project. However, I do want 8.9 which promises to have Phrase Find. If I keep my subscription current, will there be any problems skipping a few versions?

Thank you for your thoughts and experiences.

Will Avid work will with 8 x 4 gb? Anyone running with this?

As a result of a poor make up job, I have to fix (lighten) the skin color of my three subjects on screen at the same time. To make it worse, they were shot on geen screen. Is there a way to use the color tool to kix their skin withour affecting the rest of the shot?

I'm not experienced with the advanced color correction tool.  Perhaps the answer is in there?

Odyssey Q7 footage will not link in source browser, QT files have negative values

$

This one is puzzling me, so I hope that someone out there has encountered this and knows a workaround for it.  I'm running Media Composer 8.6 on PC in Windows 10.  I have lots of RAM and a sufficient graphics card.  I've had great success with this PC/MC combo for 3 years.

I'm working with footage provided by a subcontractor of my client, who shot everything with a Sony FS700 and Odyssey Q7 recorder. The files are 2K and 4K ProRes 422 MOV.  Some of the files import with no problems at all.  But others that are obviously shot on a different date/shoot won't.  No matter what I try, they will not link via the source browser in Media Composer.  These same files will open in QuickTime player and Adobe Premiere Pro CS 2015.3 (what I'll be forced to cut with if I can't get a solution to this).  Screen captures of what I'm getting are below.

When I try to link one of these files, I get a crash warning and an Avid dialogue stating MOV "cannot be linked.  Do you wish to import it?"  It will import via the traditional import dialogue, but it's a really clumsy way to work with these huge files and takes up extra drive space.  Upon further inspection, the files that are problematic seem to have NEGATIVE VALUES for the datarate under QuickTime's inspector.  (see attached pic)

Anyone else get an error like this with QuickTime files before? Any known workaround?  Like I said, either I'm going to have to import LOTS O' BIG FILES or be banished to Premiere Pro land.

Monitoring Audio

Hi All, I am just wondering about some audio set up. At work I have an Avid Nitris DX, and the analog XLR Ch1 and 2 are running to an audio mixer and then out to my speakers where I then mix the audio for my programs. Is this correct? I seem to remember that at other facilities I have worked at that there were 1/4 inch RCA's from the monitor out on the back of the Nitris running the audio mixer and then to the speakers.

Also is the Avid Nitris DX outputing line level or Mic level? I am sure it should be line but I just want to be sure.
